What’s the secret to healthy, glowing skin? Eating healthy and drinking plenty of water definitely help do the job from the inside out. But the right organic skin care products with all natural ingredients keep your skin lavish from the outside in. And yes, the ingredients matter – a lot.
If you’re focused on living a healthy lifestyle, you probably pay attention to the ingredients in the food you eat. Ideally, you’re eating mostly whole, unprocessed foods, which makes it easy to know what you’re putting in your body.
In the same way that you pay attention to the ingredients you put inside your body, you should pay attention to the ingredients that you put on your body. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it absorbs the ingredients that you put onto it. That’s why some skin care products can actually do more harm than good in the long-term. That’s also why spending a little bit extra for organic skin care products pays off big time.
Not All Skin Care Products Are Made Equal
There are definitely some skin care product ingredients that you want to avoid. These ingredients have been linked to negative health consequences, and many of them are carcinogenic:
- Synthetic colors
- DEA, MEA, & TEA
- Polyethylene Glycol, Butylene Glycol, & Propylene Glycol
If you’re interested in reading more about why you should avoid these ingredients, check out EWG.org, a website created to educate people about safe and unsafe ingredients in beauty, hair, and skin care products.
Now on to the good stuff…
What Are My Favorite Skin Care Brands?
My skin care routine is pretty minimal. I have a few soaps, lotions, and oils that I use to clean and hydrate my skin.
Before my boyfriend introduced me to Osmia Organics Purely Simple Face Cream, I didn’t use a moisturizer. Why? Because I couldn’t find one that I liked or trusted.
But when he gave me that face cream for Christmas, I became an Osmia convert. Along with the Purely Simple face cream, my present included Lip Doctor – the best chapstick you’ll ever find. It smells great, feels great, and moisturizes your lips with all natural ingredients. Both of these products are integral to my skin care routine now, especially since I live in the dry mountain climate of Colorado, and I’ve since added a few more Osmia products to my regimen. But more on that later.
What makes Osmia so special?
A number of things. First, Osmia Organics was created by Dr. Sarah Villafranco, a licensed medical doctor who started her career in the ER. While working as a doctor, she realized that she wasn’t making the impact that she wanted – to actually educate people on how to live healthier. So she left the hospital world of medicine, and applied her knowledge of healthy living to skin care where her recommendations would fall on welcome ears.
Osmia Organics started with incredibly beautiful bars of organic soap, and has evolved to include lotions, masks, chapstick, perfumes, and face/body oils. Even more, Sarah often uses herbs (like lavender) from her own garden to create her luscious products.
Which products do I currently use?
As I mentioned earlier, my assortment of Osmia products has grown since that Christmas present from my boyfriend. Here’s the full list (with full-size product prices):
- Purely Simple Face Cream ($60)
- Lip Doctor ($12)
- Sunset Body Oil ($64)
- Black Clay Facial Soap ($24)
- Brighten Facial Serum ($50)
I love these products because they feel great on my skin, smell amazing, and are 80-90% organic. I swear these products are keeping my skin healthy and glowing in the dry Colorado air. What’s nice too is that you can buy sample-sized versions of the products before going all in. But I recommend just going for the full-sizes. I promise, you won’t regret it.
Plus, if you spend $100 or more, you get free shipping. And every purchase comes with a couple of samples so you can try out their other products.
This company’s mantra is “If you can’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin.” So it makes perfect sense that all of their products are made with 100% pure, food-grade, synthetic-free ingredients.
How’d I find ClimbOn? And is it just for climbers? Well, I used to climb a lot, and when I lived in NYC a friend gave me a container of their original lotion bar. And it’s not just for climbers.
While it was originally created for climbers to help repair and nourish their hands after spending the day on the rocks, it’s now used for just about every skin condition – including eczema, cuts, scrapes, cracked cuticles and heels, road rash, diaper rash, and poison ivy.
This lotion bar is versatile, all-natural, smells great, and comes in a small but powerful package. The Original ClimbOn Lotion Bar comes in a palm-sized round tin that I carry with me everywhere. It lives in my backpack, and I use it any time my hands start to feel dry.
Because it’s a lotion bar, it’s not messy. And it lasts for a very long time. It’s definitely worth the $10.75 you spend on a 1oz bar.
ClimbOn has other products as well, such as chapstick and lotion, but I haven’t tried those products yet. Considering how great their lotion bar is, I have no doubt that their other products are great as well.
Holy shit, I love this sunscreen.
Do you use sunscreen everyday? If you don’t yet, you should start. I use a facial sunscreen on the daily because sun damage is one of the biggest causes of aging skin. This is definitely one of the best daily habits you can establish early on. But finding a trustworthy sunscreen that doesn’t contain bad ingredients is challenging.
Suntegrity Skincare’s Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen is SPF 30, and has a score of 1 on EWG. That’s the best score you can get on their rating scale, so I felt pretty safe buying and trying this sunscreen. Better yet, it has a 4-star rating on Amazon and a lot of stellar reviews, which not every safe sunscreen has.
This sunscreen is amazing. It has a slightly citrusy scent, which I love, and it blends into my skin well (it doesn’t leave a white residue). It’s thick, so you have to rub it in a bit, but a little goes a long way.
For a sunscreen it’s a bit pricey ($45 per container), but considering that you’re putting it on your face, I think it’s well worth the price.
Bonus: Homemade Avocado Honey Mask
What’s better than buying organic skin care products? Making your own products at home.
Products can get expensive, but if you make some or all of your products at home, you can save quite a bit of money. This avocado honey mask is fantastic to infuse your skin with healthy fats, vitamins, and antioxidants.
Avocados are incredibly nutrient-dense. They’re packed with potassium and vitamins A, B, D, E, and K. Honey is antibacterial and clarifying, which makes it a great cleanser. It helps to unclog your pours, and can help clear up acne-prone skin. Here’s how to make it, and how to use it:
Avocado Honey Mask Ingredients
- 1/4 Ripe Avocado
- 2 tbsp Raw Honey
1. Mash the avocado and honey together until it’s well-blended. It should look like a paste (or creamy guacamole).
2. Rub it on your face (avoiding the eye area), and leave it for 10-15 minutes.
3. Rinse your face with cool water to remove the avocado honey mask.
This mask should leave your skin feeling soft, moisturized, and glowing.
Give these organic skin care products a try, and start nourishing your skin the right way!
I’m always looking for suggestions, so what are your favorite skin care products and why do you love them?
